GOMITO/ GOMITO – CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBITION
What does it mean to work together? How does one keep the artistic integrity whilst working towards a collective aim? The loss of authorship may not only be defined as a loss but also a gain in the collective experience. Where can this balance be found?
Gomito a gomito, “elbow to elbow”, is an italian bodily metaphor that suggests the idea of working together side by side, sharing the same physical and conceptual space. This concept, shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, back to back, arm to arm and cheek to cheek… can be found in different languages.
GOMITO/ GOMITO exhibition curated by IED Firenze, is the final outcome of a peer-led collaborative project developed by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi on the occasion of Verrocchio, the Master of Leonardo (9 March-14th July 2019) in collaboration with educational institutions in the florentine art scene: Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, Fondazione Studio Marangoni, California State University and Laba Firenze.
The Palazzo Strozzi Exhibition dedicated to Verrocchio’s workshop was the starting point to reflect upon collaborative practice. Students have produced artworks related to this idea from March to June; the creative process has culminated in the exhibition taking place at Le Murate – Progetti di Arte Contemporanea, from 22nd – 28th June 2019.
The twentieth century has seen the opening of the fields of art production and the idea of individuality is being increasingly questioned. A new prominence is being given to community projects and the elucidation of the interdisciplinary network involved in the creative process.
The modern mindset of the duality of globalisation and diminishing ego has been combined with ever increasing technological innovation and almost instantaneous transference of information. This has resulted in the rethinking of the world by putting the emphasis on negotiation, sharing and the discovery of common ground.
It is this loss of authorship that GOMITO/ GOMITO wishes to highlight by denying the verticality of the traditional art process, bringing together different approaches and skills, opening a dialogue with its audience.
