Beginning photography

 

The course gives students a basic understanding of the camera, teaches black and white processing, and shows how photography can reveal one's own visual perception.Discussion, slide lectures and assignments concentrate on the following areas:

  • distance to subject: composition, focus and the relationship of photographer to subject
  • movement: the relationship between objects in motion and fixed objects
  • sense of place: the description of surroundings, for example from the approach and experience of foreigners in a historic and much photographed city
  • portraiture: an in-depth study of the act of portrayal with all its aesthetic and psycho-social implications

 Student work is evaluated throughout the semester in regular critiques.

 

15/20 of the student's best prints are submitted for the final evaluation.

 

Requirements: none

 

 

Intermediate photography

 

After a review of students' technical knowledge and expertise, assignments are given to assist each student in finding a direction in his or her approach to photography. Class time is divided between discussions of student work and an analysis of different aspects and ideas in photography through looking at the work of contemporary photographers. Lab time is used for film processing and printing. Regular lectures and demonstrations develop understanding of the problems of exposure, lighting and printing. Student work is evaluated throughout the semester in regular critiques.

 

15/20 of the student's best prints are submitted for the final evaluation.

 

Requirements: one semester of photography.

 

Advanced photography (this class runs only when there is a minimum enrollment of 8)

 

Each student submits a written proposal for a semester project. This is based on the past experience and current interests of the individual student. Class time is divided between discussions of student work and an analysis of different aspects and ideas in photography through looking at the work of contemporary photographers. Lab time is used for film processing and printing.

 

Critiques are held regularly and 15/20 of the student's best prints are submitted for the final evaluation.

 

Requirements: two semesters of photography and presentation of a portfolio demonstrating coherence and clarity of thought in both technique and aesthetic quality.
